The Truth about Transforming a Period Home.

As an interior designer, one of the most rewarding aspects of my work is the opportunity to breathe new life into spaces, blending functionality with aesthetic appeal. This was precisely the challenge I embraced when tasked with redesigning the main bedroom and ensuite bathroom of a charming period house in Surrey, originally built in 1915.

Understanding the Space
Upon visiting the property, it was evident that the existing layout posed several challenges. The room featured an abundance of windows, which, while providing natural light, had led to a fragmented and inefficient use of space. The previous arrangement included two small double wardrobes awkwardly positioned in corners to avoid obstructing the windows, with the bed placed centrally in a manner that felt disconnected from the room's architectural features. The ensuite bathroom was accessed via a narrow corridor, further limiting the spatial flow.
Reimagining the Layout
Recognising the potential to create a more cohesive and functional space, I proposed a reconfiguration that would divide the room into distinct zones: sleeping, dressing, and bathing. By introducing a partition wall, I was able to create a dedicated dressing area, allowing for more thoughtful placement of furniture and storage solutions. This division not only enhanced the room's functionality but also introduced a sense of order and tranquility.
The ensuite bathroom underwent a significant transformation as well. The previous setup, which featured an over-bath shower, was replaced with a more luxurious arrangement that included both a freestanding bath and a separate walk-in shower. This change not only improved the bathroom's functionality but also elevated its aesthetic appeal.

Design Elements and Materials
The design ethos centred on creating a serene and timeless environment. For the bedroom, I selected a bespoke arched headboard, inspired by Moorish design, to serve as a striking focal point. This design element was mirrored in the entrance archway, creating a harmonious flow between the two spaces.
In the dressing area, I opted for open hanging units along two walls, eliminating the need for doors and thereby preventing the space from feeling cramped. A custom-designed chest of drawers, inspired by a haberdashery counter I had admired in Selfridges, provided ample storage for smaller items and added a touch of vintage charm.
The ensuite bathroom featured a freestanding Albany bath as its centrepiece, with a walk-in shower enclosed by a fluted glass screen framed in brushed bronze. This choice not only provided a sense of luxury but also ensured privacy without compromising on light or space.

Lighting and Finishing Touches
Lighting played a pivotal role in enhancing the overall ambiance of the suite. I incorporated a combination of wall-mounted fixtures and ceiling lights to create layers of illumination, allowing for both task lighting and a soft, ambient glow. The use of high-quality materials, such as Calacatta Gold porcelain tiles and Atlantic Salt quartz surfaces, added a sense of luxury and durability to the space.
To infuse personality and warmth, I selected soft furnishings and accessories in a muted colour palette, with accents of pink velvet and brass detailing. These elements added depth and interest without overwhelming the senses, maintaining the suite's tranquil atmosphere.

Lets wrap things up.
This project exemplifies the transformative power of thoughtful design. By carefully considering the spatial layout, selecting appropriate materials, and paying attention to detail, I was able to create a bedroom suite that not only met the functional needs of the family but also provided a serene retreat that harmonised with the home's period charm. The end result is a space that is both timeless and contemporary, offering a perfect blend of comfort and style.
