If you're planning a home extension and feeling slightly overwhelmed, you're not alone. Many of my clients come to me at this stage—excited about gaining more space, but unsure where to start when it comes to making it feel like them.
I’m Emma Merry, founder of Emma Merry Styling, and I’ve helped dozens of families across Surrey, South London and the Home Counties turn their house into a home they love living in—one that works practically and reflects their personality. If you're at the start of your extension journey, here’s what I often share with my clients (and what I wish more people heard before they get stuck in).

1. The Right Designer Makes All the Difference
Your builder might be brilliant, and your architect will have great ideas—but it’s your interior designer who will help you connect the dots between layout, lifestyle, and style. My role isn’t just about cushions and colour palettes (although yes, I do love a gorgeous fabric), it’s about making sure the space you’re creating works for how you live now—and in 5 or 10 years.
2. Ask Around—Personal Recommendations Say a Lot
Most of my work comes from referrals—and I think that says everything. If someone’s taken the time to recommend a designer, it’s usually because they felt heard, supported, and thrilled with the result. If you’re local to places like Reigate, or South London spots like Balham or Dulwich, ask your neighbours. And always take the time to look at portfolios and reviews. It’s a great way to get a feel for someone’s style and personality.

3. Come With an Idea of What You Like (It Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect)
You don’t need a fully-formed Pinterest board, but knowing how you want your home to feel is a great starting point. Do you love earthy tones? Want to bring the garden indoors? Prefer sleek and modern or something more textural and cosy? I help my clients refine their vision into something personal and polished—but the inspiration always starts with you.
4. Be Clear About Budget—There’s No Shame in It
Money talk can feel awkward, but it’s actually one of the most important conversations we’ll have. A good designer won’t push you over budget—we’ll help you get the most out of it. I’ve built long-standing relationships with trusted local suppliers across London and beyond, which means I can source beautiful, durable materials that suit your style and your budget.

5. Communication is Everything
Designing your home should be a joy, not a headache. I believe in open, honest communication—every step of the way. You’ll always know what’s happening, what’s next, and how the design choices we make support your wider vision. My clients often tell me they felt so much more confident during their build simply because they had someone in their corner.
6. Local Knowledge Saves Time and Stress
Whether it’s knowing the quirks of borough planning laws or how to get the best out of a Surrey cottage or a South London semi, local experience goes a long way. I often collaborate closely with architects and builders to make sure every decision—from door positioning to window treatments—works in harmony. That’s how we avoid costly mistakes and create a truly cohesive design.

7. Trust Your Gut—It’s Your Home, After All
When you meet a designer, you’ll know pretty quickly if it feels right. It’s about chemistry. You want someone who gets you, understands your lifestyle, and can translate that into a design that feels effortless. A good design relationship is built on trust, laughter, and mutual respect—I take that seriously (without taking myself too seriously).
So, whether you're dreaming of a calm and considered kitchen, planning a full-scale extension, or just need help pulling your ideas into something cohesive, I’m here to guide you through it with creativity, clarity, and a bit of calm in the chaos. Every home has its own story—and I’d love to help you tell yours beautifully. Get in touch when you’re ready x
